Citrix VDI-in-a-Box
“Desktop in a Box”: Citrix VDI-in-a-Box
Despite the efforts of such competitors as VMware and Microsoft, Citrix still holds the leading position in the application software and desktop virtualization market thanks to its well-known products XenApp and XenDesktop. These products provide the widest range of features and tools for creating virtual access from any place and from virtually any mobile device.
Citrix offers VDI-in-a-Box, the so-called “Desktop in a Box”. Although the name seems quite simple, the product offers a wide-ranging functionality for developing the infrastructure of Windows virtual workplaces, such as classes, call centres or interactive kiosks.
Support in any virtualization environment
Virtualization is based on a Hypervisor – a dedicated server environment virtualization operating system. VDI-in-a-Box supports a variety of hypervisor solutions – VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer. This advantage facilitates the work in the existing customer infrastructure.
Easy to implement and use
Compared to other desktop virtualization solutions, VDI-in-a-Box requires the least amount of additional infrastructure tools, for example, there is no need for a separate SAN disk array for sharing the network load and a common storage of files, drives and virtual machine template data. Data is replicated between the VDI-in-a-Box servers, thus creating a virtual SAN.
High Definition support of multimedia content
The ICA protocol with a well-known performance in virtual desktop access and its HDX file extension allows users to remotely receive high definition multimedia content on portable devices similarly to the way it is done on a personal computer.
Low costs
The easy installation and implementation of VDI-in-a-Box may help to reduce the company’s overall infrastructure costs by up to 60% compared to other desktop virtualization solutions.
