Try out the new HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8000
In summer of last year HP (now HPE) introduced an upgrade of well known and successful storage system HPE 3PAR. This upgrade was introduced with two stages. In the 1-th of June on HPE Discover event in Las Vegas HPE presented high-end models HP 3PAR StorServ 20000 series as replacement of 10000 series. But in the end of august was announced mid-range HPE 3PAR StorServ 8000 series as replacement of 7000 series together with one more model of 20000 series.
New storage systems got:
- new hardware, including 16 Gbit FC ports, 12 Gbit SAS connectivity for its drives;
- new CPU Intel Xeon Ivy Bridge for controllers;
- increased volume of cache memory;
- internal bus, based on PCI Express Gen3.
Both high-end and mid-range storages received new fifth generation of HPE 3PAR Thin Express ASIC (one ASIC per controller for 8000 models and two per controller for 20000 models). New Gen5 ASIC decreasing response time of storage arrays by offloading controller CPU from operations like RAID check sum calculation, data and metadata processing, processing of various “thin technologies”.
By information from HP, with new Gen5 ASCIs storage arrays has four times increased density, increasing of performance up to 40% and decreasing of latency by 40% percent between the 7000 and 8000 series. New HPE 3PAR 8000 series can provide up to 1 million IOPS with 0.387 ms of latency.
Range of 3PAR models now has been splitted out to hybrid (combined classical spined drives with SSD drives) and all-flash models (model number ends on “50”. For instance, 8450). All-flash models have increased volume of cache memory compare to hybrid models.
All HPE 3PAR family members runs the same operating system HPE 3PAR OS. What means common management interface and functions for all models.
New version of HPE 3PAR OS 3.2.2 includes set of new abilities and technologies to increase efficiency of disk space usage and data protection. Using HP 3PAR Gen5 Thin Express ASIC implemented inline Thin Deduplication of stored data. Deduplication can be enabled on a per volume basis so array’s resources are not wasted when processing non-deduplicatable data. Combined with high-capacity 1.92TB and newly introduced 3.84TB SSD drives Thin Deduplication provides customers with a possibility to deploy very efficient flash-optimized storage solutions at an affordable price.
One more (but not last) new feature of HPE 3PAR Gen5 Thin Express ASIC is HPE 3PAR Persistent Checksum. This feature eliminates media and transmission errors that can be caused by any component in the I/O stack and provides additional protection above CRC transmissions for Fiber Channel protocol. Persistent Checksum is application independent and offers elaborate host OS support. When using supported HBAs, T10-DIF2 tags are added and verified on all customer data packets which are also checked and verified in the HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage sub-systems like data cache and disk drives. When using unsupported HBAs T10-DIF tags are added and verified on the back-end HBAs and/or array target ports, storage data cache and disk drives, making the data secure all the way from the hosts right to the drives.
HPE 3PAR OS 3.2.2 has expanded range of legacy and third party vendor’s storage arrays to be migrated to HPE 3PAR. A one-year license for online import is included to enable migration from HPE EVA, EMC CLARiiON CX4, EMC VNX/VNX2, EMC VMAX (VMAX, VMAX SE, VMAX 10K, 20K, 40K) or HDS NSC, USP, USP V, or USP VM.
